Over the summer, I was invited by the curator to showcase 24 of my photos in an art exhibition, in a collage titled “Minor Yet Major”. I was the only student present, alongside older, established artists of other media including photography. The exhibition focused on the “death” of major league professional sports in Oakland (following the departure of the Athletics, the Raiders, and the Warriors). It was “An exhibition documenting the past & future, the fans & community, the landmarks and memories of over 60 years and counting.”
With my photos, I wanted to focus on the Oakland sports community that has filled the void as they support their smaller, minor league, professional teams. In my collage, I featured photos of the Oakland Spiders (ultimate frisbee, Ultimate Frisbee Association), the Oakland Roots (soccer, USL Championship League) and most recently the inaugural game for the Oakland Ballers (baseball, Pioneer League); all teams who are dedicated to Oakland and their fans. All of the photos of the Oakland Ballers team are from their exhilarating inaugural opening day on June 4, 2024. The exhibition showed at the Ramsess Art Garden from July 26-28, 2024, with an opening reception on the 26th from 7-9pm. You can see more photos from the event below.
